Oyo Govt Expresses Concern Over WAEC Delays In The Conduct Of Year 2026 Examination

The Oyo State Government has expressed concern over delays in the conduct of the 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), describing the situation as distressing for candidates, parents and guardians across the state.

In a statement by the Oyo State Commissioner for Information, Dotun Oyelade, the government expressed displeasure over the avoidable stress, anxiety and risks to which candidates have been exposed as a result of the late commencement of some examination papers, contrary to the approved WAEC timetable.

The Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Hon. Olusegun Olayiwola, said reports confirmed that examination materials for Government (Objective) and Agricultural Science (Practical) papers scheduled for Thursday, June 4, did not arrive at several centres until about 6:30 p.m., making it impossible for examinations to begin as scheduled.

Olayiwola disclosed that as of 8:11 p.m., some centres in Ogbomoso and Saki were still conducting the Government paper, while the Agricultural Science Practical examination had yet to commence.

The commissioner also recalled a similar incident on June 3, when insufficient copies of Mathematics (Objective) question papers reportedly caused delays that extended examination activities late into the night.

He said officials of the ministry contacted the WAEC Zonal Coordinator, who attributed the delays to logistical challenges.

While noting that WAEC operates as an international examination body beyond the direct control of the state government, Olayiwola urged the council to take proactive steps to prevent a recurrence.

The Oyo State Government also called on WAEC to consider rescheduling any examination paper that cannot be delivered to centres on or before 4 p.m. on the examination day, to safeguard candidates’ welfare and reduce anxiety among stakeholders.

The government reaffirmed its commitment to the welfare, safety and academic success of students and pledged continued engagement with relevant stakeholders to ensure conducive conditions for learning and assessment.
