Atiku visits Amaechi after ADC presidential primary victory

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has visited former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi in Abuja, barely 24 hours after emerging as the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, for the 2027 general election.

Atiku was accompanied during the visit by former Sokoto State Governor Aminu Tambuwal, former ADC National Chairman Ralph Nwosu, and other party leaders.

The meeting followed the conclusion of the ADC presidential primary held on Wednesday night at the Congress Hall of Transcorp Hilton, Abuja, where Atiku defeated Amaechi and former banker Mohammed Hayatu-Deen.

According to official results released by the party, Atiku polled 1,846,370 votes, while Amaechi secured 504,117 votes and Hayatu-Deen received 177,120 votes.

Following the declaration of the results, the party leadership led by former Senate President David Mark presented the ADC flag to Atiku as the party’s standard bearer for the 2027 presidential election.

Speaking after his victory, Atiku appealed to aggrieved members and aspirants to unite behind the party ahead of the general election.

He also directly appealed to Amaechi and Hayatu-Deen to work with him in strengthening the party and pursuing what he described as a mission to rescue Nigeria’s democracy.

However, both Amaechi and Hayatu-Deen reportedly rejected the outcome of the primary election, alleging irregularities in the voting process.

Hayatu-Deen was also said to have declined attendance at the official announcement of the results.

Details of Thursday’s closed-door meeting between Atiku and Amaechi were not made public as of the time of filing this report.
