A fire outbreak caused by a power surge has damaged parts of an eight-flat residential building at Oloje Phase 2 Housing Estate in Ilorin West Local Government Area of Kwara State.

The incident occurred at about 3:28 p.m. on Wednesday at the housing estate in Ilorin.

The Head of Media and Publicity of the Kwara State Fire Service, Hassan Adekunle, confirmed the incident in a statement on Thursday.

According to the statement, the affected property is a residential building comprising eight flats.

“The fire affected the sitting room and dining area of the building. Firefighters responded promptly to the distress call and successfully brought the fire under control, thereby preventing it from spreading to other parts of the building and nearby properties,” Adekunle said.

He added that preliminary findings showed that the fire was caused by a power surge.

“No casualty was recorded during the incident,” the statement added.

The Director of the Kwara State Fire Service advised residents to switch off electrical appliances when not in use and ensure regular maintenance of electrical installations to prevent fire outbreaks linked to power fluctuations and electrical faults.

The service also urged residents to remain safety conscious and promptly report fire emergencies to the nearest fire station.
