Public affairs analyst, Mahmud Jega, has described Rabiu Kwankwaso’s support for the zoning of the Nigerian Democratic Congress presidential ticket to the South as a major political concession.

Jega stated this on Monday while speaking on Prime Time, a programme on Arise Television.

According to him, Kwankwaso’s decision to back the arrangement despite his strong political influence, particularly in Kano State, reflects a significant shift in political calculations ahead of the 2027 elections.

“For Kwankwaso to agree to support the zoning of the presidential ticket to the South in his party, the Nigerian Democratic Congress, was a very big decision,” Jega said.

He noted that the former New Nigeria Peoples Party presidential candidate appeared unusually calm and reflective during a recent interview, unlike his often aggressive political style.

“You had a very interesting interview with him, and raised many very important issues in the national politics today. He must be looking over his shoulders,” he stated.

“Normally, the impression people have of him is an aggressive, very active, tough fellow, but today he was extremely calm and indeed considerate,” Jega added.

The analyst said Kwankwaso’s decision may have been influenced by consultations with his political base and supporters.

“As he kept saying about the youth and social media, are they likely to follow? Because what is the use of pulling forward if the followers are not following?” he asked.

Jega, however, maintained that Kwankwaso still commands a strong political structure capable of influencing national politics.

“But he has a very solid structure, and he must have consulted very well, and he must have gotten an indication that most of his supporters are likely to go ahead. So, it’s like we are pushing towards an Obi-Kwankwaso ticket,” he said.
