The Lagos State Government has announced the indefinite closure of the outbound section of Eko Bridge leading to Lagos Island for emergency safety investigations and repair works.

The closure is scheduled to begin on Tuesday, May 12, 2026.

The State Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, disclosed this in a statement issued on Sunday.

According to him, the decision was taken to allow engineers carry out critical assessments and rehabilitation of the bridge to ensure public safety.

Motorists travelling through Apongbon and Ijora Olopa have been advised to use the Third Mainland Bridge as an alternative route to their destinations.

Osiyemi, however, clarified that the inward Lagos Island carriageway of the bridge would remain open to traffic during the repair period.

“Adequate traffic and security personnel will be deployed along alternative routes to guide motorists and ensure smooth traffic flow,” the commissioner stated.

The government appealed to road users for patience and cooperation, noting that the temporary inconvenience was necessary to safeguard lives and infrastructure.
