May Day: Akpabio promises workers living wage
President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has assured Nigerian workers of the National Assembly’s commitment to improving their welfare, including the pursuit of a living wage.
Akpabio gave the assurance in a message to mark the 2026 International Workers’ Day, issued in Abuja on Friday by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Eseme Eyiboh.
He acknowledged the economic challenges facing workers, including rising living costs and workplace pressures, and pledged sustained legislative efforts to address them.
“The 10th National Assembly recognises the challenges workers face, from rising costs of living to workplace demands,” he said.
“I assure you that the Senate remains unwavering in its commitment to legislating for a living wage, safer workplaces, pension reforms, and policies that expand job creation and protect the dignity of labour.”
The Senate President cited the passage of the new National Minimum Wage Act and ongoing welfare initiatives as evidence of the legislature’s commitment to workers’ wellbeing.
His remarks come amid growing concerns over inflation, wage sustainability and the general cost of living, which have continued to dominate public discourse.
Akpabio also called on employers across both public and private sectors to prioritise workers’ welfare, noting the link between improved conditions and productivity.
“Today, we celebrate you—the teachers who mould our future, the farmers who feed our nation, the doctors and nurses who heal our land… You are the true heroes of our democracy and the engine of our economy,” he said.
He further commended organised labour, including the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), for what he described as constructive engagement, assuring that the Senate would continue to partner with them to advance workers’ interests.
