2027 Presidency: El-Rufai urges North to step aside for South

Bashir El-Rufai has called for the North to refrain from fielding a presidential candidate in the 2027 general election, arguing that the South should be allowed to complete the current political cycle.
In a post shared on his X handle, the son of former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, said his position is based on the need to maintain balance in Nigeria’s power-sharing arrangement.
“Let the South complete their remaining four years,” he wrote, suggesting that Northern political actors should defer their ambitions until after the ongoing cycle.
He added that the 2031 election would provide an opportunity for Northern aspirants to contest the presidency.
Bashir also hinted at the possibility of a political alliance involving key opposition figures, including Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso, noting that a structured partnership with clearly defined roles could help address Nigeria’s challenges.
