United States President, Donald Trump, has cancelled a planned diplomatic trip to Pakistan aimed at facilitating talks with Iran, casting uncertainty over ongoing international mediation efforts.

The White House had earlier announced that Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner, alongside special envoy Steve Witkoff, would travel to Pakistan for discussions intended to move negotiations “toward a deal” with Tehran.

However, speaking to reporters, Trump said he called off the trip, expressing dissatisfaction with Iran’s initial negotiating stance.

“There’s no point sitting around talking about nothing,” he said, adding that the U.S. holds a strong position in the negotiations.

“We have all the cards. They can call us anytime they want, but you’re not going to be making any more 18-hour flights to sit around talking about nothing,” he said.

Trump, however, disclosed that Iran quickly responded after the cancellation with a revised proposal.

“They gave us a paper that should have been better and — interestingly — immediately, when I canceled it, within 10 minutes, we got a new paper that was much better,” he said, without providing further details.

Despite the diplomatic tension, the U.S. president suggested that the situation with Iran remains under control, describing the conflict as being “on hold” while negotiations continue behind the scenes.
