The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has said it will go ahead with its planned congresses and national convention despite the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) alleged failure to comply with court orders recognising the party’s leadership.

The party’s founder, Dr Boniface Aniebonam, disclosed this in a statement issued on Saturday, insisting that preparations for the 2027 general elections would not be stalled.

“Our programme of action to conduct congresses, primaries and conventions has been submitted to INEC, and we are going on to participate in all elective positions, including the presidential, in 2027,” he said.

Aniebonam accused INEC of delaying the implementation of court rulings directing the commission to recognise the National Working Committee led by Dr Agbo Major.

“The delays by INEC in obeying the court orders… denied the NNPP and its members many opportunities to participate in various elections nationwide,” he said.

He noted that the party could no longer afford to wait, given the approaching election cycle.

“In view of the above, we decided to go ahead and hold our congresses and convention while waiting for INEC to comply with court orders. We can no longer afford to deny our members the opportunities to participate in elections in Nigeria,” he added.

The NNPP founder maintained that the party would continue to press for compliance with the court directives, arguing that judicial pronouncements supersede administrative decisions.

“We had expected that INEC would obey the court order… there is no stay of execution or any order stopping compliance,” he said.

He also referenced past political precedents to underscore the importance of adherence to court rulings, warning that continued non-compliance could have broader implications for electoral participation.
