The Nigerian Navy has recorded over 11,000 applications from members of the public seeking to participate in its warship sailing initiative, signalling strong interest in the programme.

Director of Naval Information, Navy Captain Abi Folorunso, disclosed this on Friday via his X handle, expressing surprise at the overwhelming turnout.

“So far over 11,000 persons have applied to sail on a Nigerian Navy warship. First, I must confess that I didn’t expect this number of persons,” he said.

He, however, noted that only a limited number of applicants would be accommodated due to space constraints on the vessels.

“Challenge is we cannot get over 11,000 people onboard the limited space on the designated ships,” he added.

Folorunso announced that the list of successful applicants would be released between May 1 and May 3, 2026, urging applicants to check the Nigerian Navy’s official social media platforms for updates.

The initiative, introduced earlier in April as part of activities for the annual Navy Week, is designed to give civilians rare onboard access to naval platforms while promoting transparency and strengthening civil-military relations.

Interested Nigerians had applied through an online portal opened by the Navy, with participation subject to screening, basic identification requirements, and strict adherence to safety protocols.

Navy Week typically features ship tours, ceremonial parades, medical outreaches, and community engagement activities across coastal states, with the warship sailing experience introduced to enhance public engagement and showcase naval operations.
