Vice President Kashim Shettima on Tuesday called on public relations professionals to simplify and clearly communicate government policies to Nigerians, stressing that effective communication is key to building public trust and sustaining reforms.
Shettima made the call in Kaduna at the 2026 Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) Week, hosted by Governor Uba Sani.
According to the Vice President, the success of the Bola Ahmed Tinubu administration’s policies depends largely on how well citizens understand their purpose and benefits.
He said: “Public relations is not just about information dissemination; it is a strategic tool for governance. We must explain not only what government is doing, but why it is being done, how it benefits the people, and the role of citizens in the process.”
Shettima emphasised that policies must be broken down into simple and relatable terms to enhance public understanding and acceptance, noting that trust in government grows when communication is transparent and inclusive.
Speaking on food security, the Vice President disclosed that the Federal Government has prioritised agriculture as a central pillar of its economic agenda, with initiatives such as mechanised farming, increased funding, dry-season farming and input subsidies already underway.
He added that the real measure of success of these policies would be seen in improved outcomes for farmers, markets and households across the country.
In his remarks, Governor Sani commended Shettima’s commitment to national development, reaffirming Kaduna State’s resolve to deepen investments in agriculture and infrastructure.
Also speaking, President of the African Public Relations Association, Arik Kirani, urged Nigerians to project positive narratives about the country, noting improvements in areas such as visa processing and airport experience.
Keynote speaker, Brahim Chisunge, described food security as critical to national stability, while urging authorities to address policy implementation gaps to unlock Nigeria’s vast agricultural potential.
Earlier, NIPR President, Ike Neliaku, said the institute remains committed to promoting good governance through strategic communication, adding that Nigeria will host a global public relations summit later this year.
Highlight of the event was the commissioning of a newly constructed banquet hall at the Kaduna Government House by the Vice President, who lauded Governor Sani for delivering impactful projects aimed at strengthening governance and institutional capacity in the state.
