Gullit urges Liverpool to back Slot despite trophyless season

Former Netherlands international Ruud Gullit has called on Liverpool to retain manager Arne Slot, insisting the Dutch coach should not be sacked despite the club’s expected trophyless campaign.

Liverpool, who recently ended a long wait for silverware before this season, are now set to finish the current campaign without a major title.

Gullit criticised calls for Slot’s dismissal, describing them as premature.

“Ridiculous! They (Liverpool) didn’t win (the league) for a long, long time. They win the championship, and now all of a sudden, you want to kick him out?” he said.

Gullit argued that the club has been dealing with difficult circumstances, including the emotional impact of the death of former attacker Diogo Jota on the eve of the season.

“A lot of things happened here with Liverpool… people need more time to mourn. It has a huge effect on the team,” he said.

The former AC Milan and Chelsea star added that Slot should be given more time to rebuild and stabilise the squad.

“Therefore, they need to give Slot another season in order to get it right. Come on,” Gullit added.

Liverpool have faced scrutiny in recent weeks following inconsistent performances, with debate growing among supporters and pundits over the club’s long-term direction under the Dutch manager.
