The Deputy Senate Minority Leader, Lere Oyewumi, on Tuesday called for urgent federal intervention following the devastating rainstorm that hit Osogbo, the capital of Osun State, last Saturday.

The senator raised the matter during plenary, describing the incident as a major disaster that caused loss of lives, injuries, and extensive destruction of property.

According to him, the downpour claimed lives, injured more than 100 residents currently receiving treatment, and destroyed homes, shops, markets, and public infrastructure across affected communities.

He urged National Emergency Management Agency and other relevant federal agencies to immediately work with the state government to provide relief materials and support for victims.

Oyewumi also called for long-term measures to curb recurring environmental disasters, including improved drainage systems, better urban planning, and stronger emergency preparedness.

He stressed that proactive action is necessary to protect lives and property as cases of heavy rainfall and windstorms continue to threaten communities in the state.
