Tuggar Set to Quit Foreign Affairs Ministry for Bauchi Governorship Bid

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, is reportedly set to resign from his position to pursue the governorship of Bauchi State ahead of the 2027 general elections, sources close to the development told Patriotic Insights News

The move comes in line with a directive from President Bola Tinubu requiring all political appointees with intentions to contest elective positions in 2027 to step down on or before March 31, 2026. Dewan Goshit, head of information and public relations at the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF), had earlier announced the directive in a statement on Tuesday.

Tuggar’s anticipated resignation follows the conclusion of the 2026 national convention of the All Progressives Congress (APC), where most members of the party’s national working committee were returned unopposed.

Political watchers say attention has now shifted to cabinet members who are believed to be nursing political ambitions but have yet to formally declare their intentions.

Supporters of the Bauchi-born minister, who were part of the APC delegation to the convention, disclosed that a formal declaration of his governorship ambition is expected soon, citing growing political support for his candidacy.

Tuggar previously served as a member of the House of Representatives representing Gamawa Federal Constituency from 2007 to 2011. He also held the position of Nigeria’s ambassador to Germany between 2017 and 2023 under former President Muhammadu Buhari before his appointment as Foreign Affairs Minister in 2023.

With the March 31 deadline approaching, all eyes remain on political appointees expected to comply with the presidential directive as preparations for the 2027 elections intensify.
