Spain Closes Airspace to US Military Flights Linked to Iran Conflict

Spain has barred United States military aircraft involved in operations against Iran from using its airspace, in a move that underscores growing divisions among Western allies over the escalating Middle East conflict.

The country’s Defence Minister, Margarita Robles, confirmed on Monday that both Spanish airspace and military bases would not be available for such operations.

“The bases are not authorised, and of course neither is the use of Spanish airspace for actions related to the war in Iran,” Robles told journalists.

The decision follows reports that Spain had already denied Washington access to its military facilities, effectively limiting US logistical options in the region.

According to reports by El País, the restriction has complicated US military planning, forcing aircraft to alter routes and adjust operational logistics en route to the Middle East.

However, Spanish authorities noted that exceptions could be made in emergency situations requiring transit or landing.

Spain’s stance reflects the position of Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, who has emerged as one of the most vocal Western leaders opposing the ongoing conflict, which began following US-Israeli strikes on February 28.

The development has heightened tensions between Madrid and Washington, with US President Donald Trump reportedly threatening trade repercussions over Spain’s position.

Relations between both countries have also been strained by Spain’s refusal to meet US demands for increased NATO defence spending to five percent of member states’ Gross Domestic Product.

The move by Spain highlights deepening disagreements within Western alliances as the Middle East crisis continues to evolve.
