Backlash Over MC Oluomo’s Naira Giveaway at APC National Convention

Controversy erupted yesterday as Alhaji Musiliu Akinsanya, popularly known as MC Oluomo, handed out cash to attendees at the All Progressives Congress (APC) national convention in Abuja.

The incident reportedly occurred on the sidelines of the high-profile gathering, which brought together party delegates, stakeholders, and supporters from across the country. The convention was primarily aimed at strengthening party structures and discussing strategies ahead of forthcoming political engagements.

Eyewitnesses said MC Oluomo moved through sections of the venue, distributing naira notes to individuals who had gathered around him. Videos of the cash handout quickly circulated on social media, prompting a mix of reactions from Nigerians.

While some supporters described the act as a generous gesture, others questioned its appropriateness at a formal political event.

A Twitter user, @akachi, condemned the move, saying, “This is the only strategy they know: impoverish the people and give them peanuts during elections. It works, but it’s sad.” Another user, @miaky, added, “APC doesn’t even cover their nonsense anymore. They are showing citizens that they can buy anyone. This is a show of shame.”

MC Oluomo, a key figure in the APC support base, especially in Lagos and the Southwest, has long been associated with grassroots mobilization. His presence at the convention reaffirmed his influence within party circles.

Party officials have yet to issue a statement addressing the cash distribution. Meanwhile, the convention focused on party unity, leadership decisions, and strategies for maintaining political dominance.

Social media reactions suggest that the move may have inadvertently overshadowed the proceedings of the convention, drawing criticism and raising questions about political practices in contemporary Nigeria.
