El-Rufai Granted Temporary Bail Following Mother’s Death
Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has been granted temporary bail by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) following the death of his mother, Hajiya Umma El-Rufai.
The temporary release is to enable him participate in the funeral rites of his late mother, who died in Cairo, Egypt, after a period of illness.
His son, Bashir El-Rufai, confirmed the development in a post on X on Friday night, announcing that his father had been released from custody.
Hajiya Umma, believed to be about 100 years old, passed away on Friday, just days after the death of her daughter-in-law, Safiya Ali Rufai, compounding the family’s grief.
Her death was earlier announced by her grandson, Bello El-Rufai, who described her as a revered matriarch and called for prayers.
Meanwhile, President Bola Tinubu, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani, and National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu have all paid tributes to the deceased.
Tinubu described her as a woman who lived a fulfilled life and raised children who contributed meaningfully to society, while Atiku and Sani highlighted her legacy of service, compassion, and unity.
El-Rufai is currently facing trial over allegations of corruption and money laundering and was arraigned before a Federal High Court in Kaduna on March 24 on a 10-count charge.
The case has been adjourned to March 31 for further hearing, including consideration of his bail application.
