Lagos 2027: Zoning Permutations Favour Ambode, Abiru, Others for APC Ticket

Political activities ahead of the 2027 governorship election in Lagos State are gradually gaining momentum, with zoning permutations and consultations taking centre stage within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The development follows a directive by President Bola Tinubu mandating political appointees with aspirations for elective offices to resign on or before March 31, a move that has heightened political alignments and behind-the-scenes negotiations across the state.

Party insiders and political observers suggest that emerging dynamics within the APC may favour zoning the governorship ticket to the Lagos East senatorial district.

This has reportedly triggered early consultations among prominent figures from the zone, many of whom are believed to be positioning for the party’s ticket.

Names frequently mentioned in political circles include former Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode; Senator representing Lagos East, Adetokunbo Abiru; Minister of State for Health, Tunji Alausa; and House of Representatives member, Jimi Benson.

Others linked to the race are Hakeem Muri Okunola, Principal Secretary to the President, and former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila.

Although party sources insist that no official decision has been taken on zoning, indications suggest that the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, may also play a strategic role in the unfolding political arrangement.

He is reportedly being considered for a possible Senate position representing Lagos West as part of a broader power-sharing formula within the party.

With consultations still ongoing, stakeholders say the final decision on zoning and candidate selection will ultimately shape the APC’s strategy ahead of the 2027 elections in the state.
