Carabao Cup final: Carragher faults Arteta’s goalkeeper choice in Arsenal’s loss to Man City
Former Jamie Carragher has criticised Mikel Arteta for starting Kepa Arrizabalaga ahead of David Raya in EFL Cup Final, following Arsenal F.C.’s 2-0 defeat to Manchester City F.C..
Carragher described the decision as a major error, arguing that Arsenal should have fielded their strongest lineup in a final, considering the club’s long wait for silverware.
According to him, selecting Kepa over Raya weakened Arsenal at a crucial moment, especially with the stakes involved for supporters eager to see the club end its trophy drought.
Arteta, however, defended his choice, saying Kepa deserved the opportunity after featuring in all of Arsenal’s Carabao Cup matches this season.
The Spanish goalkeeper, who joined Arsenal last summer as backup to Raya, endured a difficult outing and was at fault for City’s opening goal after failing to deal with a cross, allowing Nico O’Reilly to score.
Kepa failed to register a save throughout the encounter, while Manchester City converted both of their shots on target.
Raya, meanwhile, has enjoyed an impressive campaign for Arsenal, recording 15 clean sheets in the league this season
