The announcement was made in a statement issued on Wednesday by the Sultanate Council Sokoto through its Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs in collaboration with the National Moon Sighting Committee.
According to the statement, no credible reports confirming the sighting of the Shawwal crescent were received from across the country on Wednesday, the 29th day of Ramadan, making it necessary for Muslims to complete Ramadan as 30 days.
“Thursday, March 19, 2026, shall be the 30th day of Ramadan 1447AH, while Friday, March 20, 2026, is hereby declared the first day of Shawwal 1447AH and Eid-el-Fitr day,” the statement said.
The Sultan, who is also President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, congratulated Muslims on the successful completion of Ramadan and urged continued prayers for peace, unity and development of the country.
He further urged the Muslim Ummah to sustain the spirit of devotion, sacrifice and discipline imbibed during the fasting period.
The statement was signed by Sambo Wali Junaidu.
