Inside Lanre Issa-Onilu’s Growing Link to Kwara 2027 Governorship Race

Findings by Patriotic Insights News have revealed growing political movements around the possible entry of the Director-General of the National Orientation Agency, Lanre Issa-Onilu, into the 2027 governorship contest in Kwara State.

Though no official declaration has been made by the former National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress, multiple sources familiar with ongoing consultations disclosed that discussions around his possible ambition have intensified in recent weeks among influential stakeholders within and outside the ruling party.

Investigations indicate that his name is gaining increasing attention in succession calculations ahead of the completion of Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq’s second term, with some political actors reportedly considering him a strong option in the unfolding contest.

Checks by Patriotic Insights News show that several aspirants are already being mentioned across party structures, including lawmakers and senior political office holders, but insiders say Issa-Onilu’s emergence is gradually reshaping internal conversations within the APC in Kwara.

A source close to ongoing consultations said his administrative experience, communication background and long-standing relationship with different political blocs have placed him in favourable consideration.

Further findings suggest that some stakeholders see him as a figure capable of sustaining current governance reforms while also strengthening party cohesion ahead of the next election cycle.

Political observers who spoke with Patriotic Insights News noted that his years in party administration at the national level gave him strategic visibility beyond Kwara politics.

Before his appointment as NOA Director-General in 2023, Issa-Onilu served in key communication roles within the APC and had earlier built a long career in journalism, where he handled political reporting and editorial assignments in major national media organisations.

At the National Orientation Agency, he has also been linked with institutional reforms, digital initiatives and renewed public engagement programmes, developments supporters believe may further strengthen his political profile.

Although consultations remain informal, investigations suggest that his final decision could influence alignments within the ruling party as political activities gradually gather momentum toward the next governorship election in Kwara State.

For now, neither Issa-Onilu nor his close associates have publicly confirmed any formal governorship ambition, but political watchers say the conversations around his name are becoming difficult to ignore.
