Tambuwal announced his decision in a resignation letter dated March 11 and addressed to the PDP ward chairman in Tambuwal/Shinfiri ward of Sokoto State.
The former governor cited the persistent internal crisis and ongoing conflicts within the party as the major reasons for his exit.
According to him, the decision was taken after “deep reflection” and extensive consultations with political associates and stakeholders.
Tambuwal said he has now resolved to continue his political journey with the African Democratic Congress.
The senator currently represents Sokoto South Senatorial District in the National Assembly.
