The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, said the Wuse Ward of the party lacked the constitutional authority to suspend a sitting senator, insisting that the reported action could not stand.
His reaction followed an announcement by the Wuse Ward leadership in Abuja that it had indefinitely suspended Kingibe over alleged anti-party activities, insubordination and violation of party rules.
The Ward Chairman, Kanayo Chukwu, disclosed that the decision was reached during a stakeholders’ meeting held on March 10, 2026, which he said was attended by party executives and members within the ward.
Chukwu explained that the meeting deliberated on several allegations against the senator, including the alleged confiscation of the ward register, running of a parallel registration exercise, persistent absence from ward meetings, failure to pay statutory party dues and acts considered insubordinate to party leadership.
According to him, the ward resolved to suspend the senator after what he described as due consideration of the allegations.
He said: “After due consideration of the grave offences, a motion was moved by the general house for the immediate suspension of Senator Ireti Kingibe, and it was ratified by a two-thirds majority of the executives present.”
Chukwu added that the resolution had been forwarded to the Chairman of the Abuja Municipal Area Council chapter of the party, Omale Sule, for further ratification in line with the party’s procedures.
Confirming receipt of the resolution, Sule said the matter would follow due process before any final decision is taken.
“As the party chairman at the local government level, I must wait for the official submission. Once received, it will be forwarded to the state chairman for further action,” he said.
Also reacting, the ADC Chairman in the Federal Capital Territory, Clement Ehijiator, said the leadership had received the report of the ward’s action and would examine the allegations in accordance with the party’s constitution.
Ehijiator said the report would subsequently be transmitted to the national leadership for appropriate action.
“As the constitutional chairman of the party in the FCT, I have received the report. We will examine the allegations and take appropriate steps in line with the party’s constitution before forwarding them to the national leadership,” he said.
However, Abdullahi maintained that the national leadership of the party was not aware of any valid decision suspending the senator, stressing that the ward lacks the power to take such action against a federal lawmaker.
“The ward does not have such powers to suspend a senator from the party. They don’t know what they are doing,” he said.
Reacting to the development, Senator Kingibe also dismissed the purported suspension, describing it as illegal, null and void.
She said those behind the action acted in ignorance of the party’s constitution and lacked the authority to sanction her.
