Reps amend Electoral Act, introduce N10m fine, two-year jail term for dual party membership
The House of Representatives has amended the Electoral Act 2026 to criminalise dual membership of political parties in Nigeria.
Under the new provision, any individual found to be a member of more than one political party at the same time will face a fine of N10 million.
The amendment was passed during Wednesday’s plenary session at the National Assembly.
Lawmakers also prescribed a maximum prison term of two years for offenders found guilty of violating the provision.
The move is aimed at strengthening party discipline and electoral integrity within Nigeria’s political system.
