Osun West Senator Oyewumi Dumps PDP for Accord Party

The lawmaker representing Osun West Senatorial District in the Senate, Lere Kamorudeen Oyewumi, has defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the Accord Party, marking another significant shift in the political landscape of Osun State.

Oyewumi, who was elected on the PDP platform in the 2023 general elections, formally registered as a member of the Accord Party in his hometown, Ward 9, Ikire, in Irewole Local Government Area.

Until his defection, the senator was the last PDP representative in the Senate from Osun State following the earlier exit of fellow senators Olubiyi Fadeyi and Francis Fadahunsi, who had moved to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The development comes amid a wave of defections that has weakened the PDP’s structure in the state. In 2025, the party lost three members of the House of Representatives to the APC.

The political realignments intensified after Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, defected to the Accord Party in December 2025.

Despite the governor’s earlier move, Oyewumi had remained with the PDP until now. However, speculation about his continued stay in the party heightened following the recent defection of six members of the House of Representatives from Osun State to the Accord Party.

Similarly, the 25 PDP members of the Osun State House of Assembly had earlier resolved to join the Accord Party in what observers described as a move to align with the governor.

Confirming the latest development in a statement issued by his media aide, Timileyin Popoola, the senator was formally received into the party by the Osun State Chairman of the Accord Party, Victor Akande, alongside other party leaders and supporters.

According to the statement, Oyewumi’s decision followed his earlier resignation from the PDP due to what it described as irreconcilable differences within the party.

It added that the move was also driven by the senator’s desire to strengthen his commitment to effective representation and development for the people of Osun West Senatorial District.

The statement noted that throughout his tenure in the Senate, Oyewumi had demonstrated dedication, humility and a strong sense of responsibility toward the welfare of his constituents.
