RIVERS: Amaechi’s house attacked, ADC office set ablaze

Former Minister of Transportation and ex-Rivers State Governor, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, narrowly escaped harm on Friday as assailants attacked his family home in Ubima, Rivers State, while simultaneously setting fire to the nearby African Democratic Congress (ADC) secretariat. The attacks occurred ahead of Amaechi’s arrival to kickstart the ADC’s membership registration in the state.

Speaking to supporters after completing his registration, Amaechi commended security agencies for their swift response and urged residents to remain calm, warning against violent reprisals.

“I want to sympathize with our landlord at the ADC secretariat and the people of Ubima Ward. Don’t be violent, as violence may lead to death, but they cannot stop us from meeting in our communities,” Amaechi said.

He also called on authorities to ensure that those responsible are prosecuted. “I thank the Commissioner of Police and the Director of the SSS. They showed a lot of professionalism, in fact I wasn’t expecting that level of cooperation. But this cannot continue. The perpetrators must face justice,” he added.

Amaechi further addressed the challenges facing Rivers people, highlighting hunger and corruption as national concerns. “Our role is to be calm, be peaceful. What they are doing is a distraction. People are dying of hunger while a few are stealing our resources. We can no longer stay quiet,” he said. He encouraged Rivers ADC members to register en masse ahead of the 2027 elections, stressing that their numbers will send a clear message at the polls.

The attacks escalated when gunmen reportedly targeted Amaechi’s convoy, exchanging fire with his security detail before being repelled. No casualties were reported among Amaechi’s entourage.
