The Israeli Ambassador to Nigeria, Michael Freeman, has accused Iran of sponsoring extremist activities in Nigeria and other parts of the world, claiming Tehran is backing groups aimed at destabilising countries while continuing its hostility against Israel.
Speaking on The Morning Show on Arise News on Friday, Freeman alleged that Iran is the only country within the United Nations that openly declares a desire to destroy another sovereign state, citing repeated threats against Israel.
He further claimed that Tehran has, over several decades, supported militant groups and terror organisations globally in pursuit of that goal, naming Hamas and Hezbollah as examples. He also held Iran responsible for the October 7 attack carried out by Hamas against Israel.
Freeman stated that Iranian-backed activities have been observed across Europe, Australia, and parts of Africa. Focusing on Nigeria, he alleged that the Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN) receives support from Iran.
“The issue here is Iran. It is the only country in the UN that expressly desires to wipe another country off the face of the earth,” Freeman said. “We have seen over 47 years how they have sponsored terror organisations, supported Hezbollah, and acted in Europe, Australia, and Nigeria to create instability. Israel will not allow another country to acquire nuclear weapons with the express intent to destroy Israel.”
He added: “It is well documented that movements such as the Islamic Movement of Nigeria are supported by the Iranian regime. The Supreme Leader himself posted on social media expressing backing for them. Iran’s activities are not limited to Nigeria but extend across West Africa.”
The envoy’s remarks highlight ongoing concerns over Iran’s influence in Africa and the broader Middle East, and its potential impact on regional security.
