Gov Yusuf Strengthens APC Hold in Kano as Ex-Commissioner Doguwa Becomes State Chairman

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kano State has elected Alhaji Haruna Umar Doguwa, the resigned Commissioner for Water Resources, as its new state chairman, alongside a fresh set of executive members, in a move that further consolidates Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s influence over the party.

Doguwa’s resignation as commissioner, previously accepted by Governor Yusuf, enabled him to contest for the chairmanship, which he won during Tuesday night’s election. His emergence positions Governor Yusuf’s allies in key party offices, reinforcing his firm grip on APC structures within the state. The exercise also saw the Deputy Senate President, Senator Barau Jibrin, secure influence over the Vice Chairman position in Gwangwazo, while former APC National Chairman Dr. Umar Abdullahi Ganduje maintains a presence through his loyalists in the state leadership.

Other officials elected include Salisu Maje-Gwangwazo as Deputy Chairman, Prof. Yusuf Sabo-Bichi as State Secretary, and Fatima Dala as State Woman Leader, with the full executive committee comprising 28 members tasked with promoting internal cohesion and preparing for forthcoming political contests.

Stakeholders described the election as peaceful and transparent, expressing confidence that the new leadership would strengthen grassroots mobilization and unify party members across Kano’s 44 local government areas.

In his acceptance speech, Doguwa pledged to work inclusively with all party stakeholders, emphasizing the importance of party unity and readiness for upcoming electoral engagements in the state.

This development signals a strategic consolidation of APC control in Kano ahead of 2027 elections, balancing the influence of Governor Yusuf, Senator Jibrin, and former party figures in key leadership positions.
