FIFA Confirms DR Congo for Play-Off, Ends Super Eagles’ World Cup Bid

FIFA on Wednesday confirmed DR Congo as Africa’s representative in the forthcoming inter-confederation play-off tournament, effectively ending Nigeria’s hopes of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
In an accreditation notice circulated to journalists ahead of the competition, the world football governing body outlined the tournament format and listed the six participating nations, with DR Congo included in the final line-up.
The confirmation leaves no pathway for the Super Eagles, whose place had remained uncertain following a petition by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) challenging the outcome of their CAF play-off clash in November 2025.
Nigeria had lost the decisive tie to DR Congo on penalties after a 1–1 draw in regulation time. The NFF subsequently filed a formal protest, alleging that DR Congo fielded ineligible players during the encounter and seeking to have the result overturned in Nigeria’s favour.
However, FIFA’s latest communication confirms DR Congo’s participation in the play-off tournament, extinguishing Nigeria’s chances of returning to the qualification race.
Further details are expected.
