Umahi: Avoid using influence to suppress critics — Kingibe

Senator representing the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Senator Ireti Kingibe, has cautioned political office holders against deploying their influence to intimidate or silence critics, warning that such actions undermine democratic principles and encourage impunity.

Kingibe gave the warning on Friday while speaking with journalists shortly after the release of a woman identified as Tracy Ohiri, who had accused the Minister of Works, Senator Dave Umahi, of owing her N250 million allegedly dating back to his tenure as Governor of Ebonyi State about 12 years ago.

It would be recalled that human rights activist, Omoyele Sowore, had earlier confronted the minister at the FCT Police Command over allegations that law enforcement authorities were being used to settle personal disputes.

Reacting to the development, Kingibe stressed that injustice, irrespective of who is involved, poses a serious threat to democratic governance.

According to her, “Injustice, regardless of its perpetrator, signals an era of impunity. This issue goes beyond powerful individuals and includes anyone with the means and opportunity to misuse authority.

“For democracy to thrive, this culture must be collectively addressed. As the Senator representing the FCT and Chairperson of the Senate Committee on Women Affairs, I have a responsibility to defend my constituents.”

She disclosed that upon learning about the alleged wrongful detention of the woman despite an existing protective order, she intervened immediately.

“I was informed that the woman was unwell and hospitalized. I mobilised my colleagues and reached out to the Senate President to ensure the matter received attention at the highest level,” she said.

Kingibe added that she remained engaged until the issue was resolved, expressing satisfaction that the woman had regained her freedom.

“I made a commitment not to leave until justice was served, and I am pleased that she has now been released,” she stated.
