Edo LP Defectors Cite Support for Peter Obi as Reason for Joining ADC

Former Labour Party (LP) governorship candidate in Edo State, Olumide Akpata, has explained why some members of the party in the state recently decamped to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Akpata, who himself was formally received into the ADC earlier this week, said the move was aimed at supporting former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi.
According to him, the group believes in a “better Nigeria” and felt that their objectives would be better served under the ADC platform.
“Those of us in the Edo State Labour Party sat down and decided that the journey towards a better Nigeria would be best traveled on this platform to continue our support for Peter Obi,” Akpata said.
He added that remaining in the Labour Party would limit their ability to help Obi achieve his goal of becoming the ADC’s presidential candidate.
The ADC had earlier faced a tense situation during the reception ceremony, where reports indicated an assassination attempt targeting Peter Obi and other party leaders.
Akpata, however, reiterated his commitment to the party’s vision and insisted that the defection was motivated purely by political alignment and shared goals, rather than personal interests.
