Oyegun Flags Grave Danger After Attack on ADC Leaders in Edo

John Odigie-Oyegun, former Edo State governor and chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has raised alarm over the reported assassination attempt on him, former presidential candidate Peter Obi, and other party stakeholders, describing the act as “playing with fire.”

The incident reportedly occurred at Oyegun’s residence in Benin City during the official defection of Olumide Akpata to the ADC. Gunmen allegedly stormed the venue, opening fire on party loyalists and members of the Obidient Movement.

Speaking to journalists, Oyegun disclosed that security operatives had tipped off organizers about a possible attack, prompting the abrupt conclusion of the programme. He faulted what he termed “poor coordination” among security agencies and questioned the state government’s commitment to protecting lives and property.

“The leaders, both at the national and state levels, are acting recklessly. The repercussions could be devastating, far beyond what many imagine,” Oyegun warned.

He added, “During the programme, we received credible intelligence indicating that the venue might be attacked. We acted swiftly to end the event, narrowly avoiding a disaster. Shortly after we left, assailants arrived in multiple vehicles, firing indiscriminately. Several people were injured. The lack of synergy among security agencies is alarming in a state with a sitting governor.”

The former governor called on authorities to ensure the safety of citizens, stressing that the protection of lives should be a priority for any government.
