ADC Heads to ECOWAS Court Over Alleged Attack on Obi, Oyegun, Others

 

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has condemned what it described as an assassination attempt on some of its top leaders in Edo State and disclosed plans to approach the ECOWAS Court of Justice over the incident.

In a statement issued on Wednesday by its National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, the party alleged that gunmen targeted former Edo State governor, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun; former Anambra State governor and party leader, Peter Obi; and former Labour Party governorship candidate, Olumide Akpata, during a political engagement in the state.

The party described the development as a “disturbing gun attack and assassination attempt,” alleging that the incident forms part of a growing trend of political intimidation against opposition figures.

According to Abdullahi, the attack was not isolated but reflective of what he termed an escalating pattern of hostility against the party and its members across the country.

“The resort to gunfire against lawful political actors is unacceptable in a constitutional democracy,” the statement read. “It represents a dangerous descent into political terror.”

The ADC also referenced previous remarks allegedly made by Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, claiming he had earlier stated that he could not guarantee the safety of Peter Obi if he visited the state.

The party expressed concern over what it described as inflammatory rhetoric and threats preceding the incident, insisting that no elected official has the authority to threaten or endanger political opponents for exercising their democratic rights.

It further accused the governor of making what it called “irresponsible claims” linking the party to cult-related activities and threatening to demolish properties belonging to opposition members.

“Edo State is not the private estate of any individual or political party,” the ADC stated, adding that Nigeria’s democracy must not be undermined by acts of intimidation.

The party disclosed that it is compiling documented cases of alleged political violence and harassment against its members, which would be forwarded to diplomatic missions and the regional court.

“We shall be presenting our findings to the international community and seeking redress at the ECOWAS Court,” Abdullahi said.

While urging its members nationwide to remain calm and vigilant, the ADC maintained that it would pursue all lawful means to safeguard its leaders, members and supporters.

“Regardless of intimidation, we will not bow to terror. Our members should continue their lawful activities without fear,” the statement added.
