Suspected terrorists on Sunday night attacked Gbugbu community in Edu Local Government Area of Kwara State, throwing residents into panic as sustained gunfire reportedly echoed across the area for hours.
Sources in the community disclosed that the assailants stormed the town late in the evening, firing sporadically, forcing many residents to remain indoors while others fled into surrounding bushes for safety.
A resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity, described the situation as terrifying, saying the exact number of casualties or abducted persons could not yet be ascertained.
“We don’t know the number of those taken or killed yet. The situation is terrifying. Gunshots were everywhere and people were running for their lives,” the source said.
The latest attack has heightened tension in Edu Local Government Area, which has witnessed a series of violent incidents in recent times, including killings, abductions and destruction of property.
Community members lamented what they described as recurring security breaches, calling on the state government and security agencies to urgently intervene to prevent further loss of lives and property.
As of the time of filing this report, security operatives had yet to release an official statement on the incident.
