The Chairman of Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State, Abubakar Danladi, has imposed a dusk-to-dawn curfew across the council area following renewed security concerns triggered by the February 3 attack on Woro and Nuku communities.
In a statement made available to journalists on Friday, the council boss said the curfew, which takes immediate effect, will run daily from 9:00 p.m. to 5:30 a.m., restricting both vehicular and pedestrian movement within the local government.
Danladi explained that the decision followed a comprehensive security review conducted in collaboration with security agencies and key community stakeholders.
He described the measure as proactive and necessary to forestall further breakdown of law and order, stressing that the safety of residents remains paramount.
According to him, “In response to emerging security challenges within our communities, I have approved the imposition of a total curfew from 9:00 p.m. to 5:30 a.m. daily. During these hours, all forms of movement are strictly prohibited across Kaiama Local Government Area.
“This temporary step is aimed at safeguarding lives and property, and to enable security operatives effectively address the prevailing threats.”
The council chairman urged residents to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies, assuring that the restriction is temporary and will be reviewed as the situation improves.
Tension has persisted in Kaiama LGA since gunmen invaded Woro community, killing several residents, abducting others and setting buildings ablaze.
In the aftermath of the attack, over 176 bodies were reportedly recovered and buried in mass graves, while security forces intensified patrols in Woro and neighbouring settlements.
A viral video which surfaced last weekend showed women and children allegedly abducted during the assault, lined up in a forest location as armed men interrogated them, further heightening fears in the area.
Security agencies are yet to issue an official update on efforts to rescue the abductees and apprehend the perpetrators.
