The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has faulted President Bola Ahmed Tinubu over his assent to the Electoral Act Amendment, describing the development as a setback for democratic consolidation.

In a statement yesterday by its National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, the party said the speed with which the amendment was signed into law raises questions about the intent behind the changes.

The opposition party maintained that the amendment, rather than strengthening the electoral framework, introduces ambiguity and grants what it termed “excessive discretion” in the collation and transmission of election results.

It argued that at a time when Nigerians are demanding greater transparency and accountability in the electoral process, the swift approval of the bill could erode public confidence in future elections.

The ADC also queried why the amendment was expedited despite what it described as widespread public concern. According to the party, the urgency surrounding the process suggests unease about submitting to a transparent and competitive electoral system.

The party further noted that the ruling party, which controls over 30 states and holds majority seats in the National Assembly, ought to have encouraged broader consultation before effecting changes to the electoral framework.

It warned that failure to guarantee electronic transparency in the conduct of elections and transmission of results could heighten political tension during future polls.

However, the ADC said it would pursue its grievances through lawful and constitutional means.

The party pledged to mobilise Nigerians towards vigilance, civic participation and unity in defence of democratic principles, insisting that the will of the electorate must remain paramount in the nation’s electoral process.
