The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has declared that Nigeria’s democracy must extend beyond periodic elections and translate into measurable improvements in citizens’ daily lives through accountability, transparency and people-focused governance.

Speaking at a Distinguished Personality Lecture at the Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Abuja, the minister stressed that democratic governance should not be reduced to voting rituals but must be judged by its ability to provide visible infrastructure and responsive leadership.

Wike described infrastructure as the most practical and verifiable indicator of good governance, noting that functional roads, quality schools, efficient healthcare systems and stable power supply represent the true dividends of democracy.

According to him, there is a direct connection between purposeful political leadership and sustainable infrastructural development, warning that public trust in government weakens when basic amenities fail.

He explained that since Nigeria’s return to democratic rule in 1999, expectations have remained high, but the real test of democracy lies in improved living standards and institutional efficiency.

“For the ordinary citizen, democracy should be reflected in roads that are motorable, hospitals that provide healing, water that is accessible, and security that inspires confidence,” he said.

Wike further stated that public office must be seen as a sacred responsibility rather than a channel for personal gain, adding that governance should be driven by collective progress and social transformation.

He maintained that good governance remains the engine for democratic success, ensuring that institutions operate fairly and effectively while remaining sensitive to the needs and legitimate expectations of the people.
