Seven Feared Dead As Suspected Herdsmen Invade Kogi Community, Panic Spread

Tension has gripped Ejule Ojebe community in Ibaji Local Government Area of Kogi State following a deadly attack by suspected Fulani herdsmen that reportedly left no fewer than seven residents dead.

The assault, which occurred on February 7, threw the agrarian community into chaos, with several others said to have sustained varying degrees of injuries.

Sources within the area said the attackers, who were recently allowed to settle in the community, allegedly launched the violent onslaught after claiming that some of their cattle had gone missing.

A resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity, disclosed that the herders were granted permission by the traditional ruler earlier in the year to reside in the area, as part of existing local arrangements.

According to him, trouble started after the herders accused some villagers of cattle rustling.

“It was in January that our king permitted them to stay here as they normally do during grazing periods. Suddenly, they claimed their cows were missing. Shortly after, armed men stormed the community, shooting sporadically,” the source said.

He added that seven persons were killed on the spot, while many others were wounded in the attack.

Fear and uncertainty now pervade the community, with many residents reportedly fleeing or staying indoors over concerns of possible fresh attacks.

“As we speak, people are living in fear. There is serious tension because nobody knows if they will return,” the resident added.
