Pope Leo XIV Condemns Deadly Attacks in Nigeria, Calls for Urgent Protection of Citizens

Pope Leo XIV, born Robert Prevost, has expressed deep sorrow over the recent wave of violent attacks across Nigeria, describing the incidents as “deeply troubling” and urging authorities to take stronger measures to protect citizens.

In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter) on Sunday, the pontiff offered prayers for victims of terrorism and communal violence following deadly assaults reported in Kwara, Katsina, and Benue states.

“It is with profound sorrow that I learned of the recent attacks against communities in Nigeria, resulting in significant loss of life,” the Pope wrote. “I extend my prayerful closeness to all victims of violence and terrorism. I also appeal to the authorities to act decisively to safeguard the lives of every citizen.”

The remarks come amid renewed security concerns following a spate of violent attacks that left dozens dead, destroyed homes, and displaced residents in several states.

In Kwara State, gunmen launched a deadly assault on Woro village in Kaima Local Government Area shortly after military operations targeted suspected “terrorist elements.” Witnesses reported that the attackers set shops ablaze and torched the residence of a traditional ruler, forcing terrified residents to flee into nearby bushes.

On the same day, over 20 people were reportedly killed during a violent raid in Doma community, Tafoki Ward, Faskari Local Government Area of Katsina State. Locals said armed men stormed the area, opening fire indiscriminately before fleeing.

Meanwhile, in Benue State, security operatives successfully repelled an attack on Anwase village, Kwande Local Government Area, although several houses were destroyed. DSP Udeme Edet, the state Police Public Relations Officer, confirmed prompt response by security forces.

The Pope’s intervention underscores the urgent need for heightened security measures and renewed vigilance to protect Nigerian citizens amid rising violence.
