A United States lawmaker, Senator Riley Moore, has dismissed reports suggesting that the US government is considering plans to divide Nigeria, describing such claims as unfounded and misleading.
Moore clarified his position in a statement issued on Saturday following his recent visit to Nigeria, where he held a series of high-level meetings with government officials and other stakeholders.
According to him, discussions during the engagements focused on security cooperation and regional stability, stressing that the issue of breaking up Nigeria was never raised in any formal or informal conversation.
“At no point in my meetings was there any serious discussion about dividing Nigeria,” he stated.
The senator warned that attempts to promote separatist agendas could worsen insecurity and further endanger vulnerable populations, particularly Christians in parts of Northern Nigeria and the Middle Belt.
He noted that a fragmented and destabilized Nigeria would create more room for terrorist groups to operate, thereby increasing threats not only within the country but across the African continent.
Moore added that his advocacy centers on protecting lives and supporting all Nigerians affected by violent extremism, regardless of religious or ethnic background.
He also highlighted the recently signed US–Nigeria security cooperation agreement, describing it as a major step toward addressing terrorism and strengthening bilateral relations between both countries.
“The new security cooperation framework marks an important milestone in tackling violence and deepening ties between our two nations,” he said.
