The Kwara State Police Command has said it was overwhelmed when terrorists launched the deadly attack on Woro community, which claimed scores of lives.
The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, disclosed this on Friday during an interview on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief.
Residents of Woro had earlier alleged that security agencies failed to respond promptly, claiming that it took over 10 hours for any official intervention after the attack began.
While initial reports put the death toll at over 100, Ejire-Adeyemi confirmed that 75 people were killed in the assault.
She explained: “As of that moment, the officers were probably overwhelmed. We work closely with local vigilantes, and the National Forest guards are also present in the community. The distance from Woro to the Divisional Police Headquarters in Kayama may have delayed our response, but reinforcements were eventually deployed.”
The state government and security agencies have since intensified efforts to secure Woro and prevent further attacks.
