The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has taken a bold step to strengthen national security with the commissioning of a reactivated Super Puma helicopter at its 205 Rotary Wing Base in Ikeja, Lagos. The development underscores the Service’s commitment to maintaining air superiority across the nation.
Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), described the commissioning of the aircraft, designated NAF 565, as a “symbol of renewed capability and institutional focus,” noting that the move goes beyond adding a single helicopter to the fleet.
“This is not merely about the return of an aircraft to our inventory,” Aneke said. “It is a clear demonstration of our unwavering commitment to building a highly motivated, professional, and mission-ready force.”
According to a statement by Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, Director of Public Relations and Information, Headquarters, NAF, the reactivation of legacy platforms like the Super Puma remains central to strengthening the Service’s operational capacity.
Aneke further highlighted that the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda has translated into tangible capability gains for the Air Force through strategic acquisitions and the restoration of critical assets.
Describing the Super Puma as one of NAF’s most versatile rotary-wing aircraft, the CAS stressed its key roles in troop transport, casualty evacuation, search and rescue, and logistics support. The helicopter had previously played a pivotal role in Operation Hadin Kai and other joint missions.
With its return, the Super Puma is expected to boost maritime security around Lagos and enhance counter-insurgency and anti-banditry operations nationwide, officials said.
