A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Segun Showunmi, has criticised former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, describing him as politically “unserious” and lacking structural depth in his approach to party politics ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking on Saturday during an appearance on Hard Copy, a Channels Television programme, Showunmi argued that Obi failed to consolidate his political base despite having opportunities within earlier party platforms.
According to him, Obi would have had a clearer path to electoral victory if he had remained consistent within a single party structure rather than frequently changing alliances.
“Peter Obi is not serious. He doesn’t know where his victory card is. He could have stayed in the Labour Party, and there could have been a clear path to victory for him,” he said.
Showunmi accused Obi of lacking long-term structural planning, insisting that effective politics requires institutional grounding and strategic party-building.
“Every time he’s moving around. I don’t deal with that kind of laziness. When it comes to structural thinking, Peter Obi is very lazy. If he had remained in APGA all this while, he could have built the same crowd he has now,” he stated.
He further noted that Obi’s current political alignment puts him at a disadvantage in any competitive primary contest, especially against seasoned politicians.
“Now he has aligned himself with people among whom I know he can’t even win a primary. I know Atiku very well, and nobody takes him for granted when it comes to primaries because he has institutional experience dating back to 1992,” Showunmi added.
He also dismissed the idea of imposing Obi as a consensus candidate within any coalition arrangement, saying party delegates and stakeholders are unlikely to accept such pressure.
“You don’t come to a political party with that kind of man and start screaming that if it’s not Peter Obi, you won’t agree. Who will listen to that?” he said.
