Obi faults Tinubu’s frequent foreign trips, raises security concerns

Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, has criticised President Bola Tinubu over what he described as frequent foreign trips amid worsening insecurity in the country.

Obi, in a post on his verified X handle on Saturday, said the President had already spent 23 days outside Nigeria in January alone, warning that such prolonged absences raise concerns given the nation’s security challenges.

According to him, the first month of the year often sets the tone for governance and national priorities, but noted that the country continues to grapple with rising insecurity.

He stated that the President began the year abroad and returned on January 17, before embarking on another trip to Türkiye on January 26, where he reportedly remained as of January 31.

Obi expressed worry over the spate of violent incidents recorded across the country within the same period, including killings and multiple kidnapping cases involving children, pregnant women and nursing mothers, with large ransom demands by abductors.

He stressed the need for closer presidential presence and urgent attention to the security situation, saying leadership must be visibly engaged at critical times.

The Presidency has yet to issue an official response to Obi’s remarks as of press time.
