Amotekun detainees’ wives protest husbands’ prolonged detention

Wives of some Osun State Amotekun Corps personnel arrested by the Nigeria Police over the killing of one Akinlalu have staged a protest in Osogbo, decrying the continued detention of their husbands.

The women, who protested on Monday, appealed to the Federal Government, the Nigeria Police, former governors and other prominent political leaders to intervene and secure the release of the detained operatives.

Speaking on behalf of the protesters, Mrs Ajiboye Olusola lamented that their husbands had been held in custody in Abuja for over four months without communication or formal information on their whereabouts.

She said the prolonged detention had subjected their families to untold hardship.

“Our husbands have been in detention for over four months, and we have not heard from them. The suffering is too much for us to bear,” Olusola said.

“We are pleading with the Federal Government and the Nigeria Police to release our husbands. They did not commit any offence.”

Another protester, Mrs Idayat Oladokun, described the detained operatives as the breadwinners of their respective families, noting that their incarceration had plunged their households into severe economic hardship.

“Our husbands are the ones catering for our families. Since they were arrested, we have been suffering. We cannot endure this anymore,” she said.

Oladokun added that her husband was arrested in October after leaving home for work and had not returned since then.

“He told me he was going to work that day, but he never came back. We are begging those in authority to help us and ensure the release of our husbands,” she pleaded.

The protesters called for urgent intervention to end what they described as unjust and prolonged detention of the Amotekun personnel.
