Kwara Polytechnic: Governor Orders Investigation, Rector Suspends Duties
Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq has ordered a formal investigation into the recent student protest at Kwara State Polytechnic, prompting the immediate stepping aside of the institution’s Rector, Engr. Dr. Abdul Jimoh Mohammed.
The Governor announced the constitution of a three-member committee to examine both the remote and immediate causes of the unrest, as well as the handling of the situation. The panel is chaired by the State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Bar. Senior Ibrahim Sulyman, and includes Commissioner for Environment, Hon. Nafisat Buge, and the Permanent Secretary, Service Welfare, Dr. Mrs. Mercy Olufunke Shittu.
A statement by Hajia Sa’adatu Modibbo Kawu, Commissioner for Tertiary Education, said the committee has two weeks to submit its report to the Governor. Their mandate includes:
Investigating the underlying and immediate triggers of the protest and assessing how it was managed;
Recommending measures to prevent similar incidents in the future;
Proposing strategies to enhance the growth and development of the institution.
Until the investigation is concluded, the Rector has been asked to step aside, with the most senior Deputy Rector assuming responsibilities in an acting capacity.
The committee is expected to consult widely with all relevant stakeholders as part of its assignment.
