Obaseki’s Cousin Assaulted in Benin: Falana Condemns Attack as Attempt on Life

Human rights lawyer, Femi Falana, SAN, has condemned the brutal assault on Pedro Obaseki, cousin to the immediate past Governor of Edo State, Godwin Obaseki, describing it as a clear attempt on his life.
Falana spoke on Monday during an interview with Arise Television, saying that Pedro was abducted, stripped naked, and severely beaten by an armed gang while playing football in Benin City.
The lawyer lamented that despite Pedro being taken to a police station, no investigation was conducted, and none of the assailants was arrested.
“The events that took place in Benin City are undeniably criminal. His right to life was under direct threat when a well-armed gang descended on him at a football field,” Falana said.
“Pedro was abducted, stripped naked, and beaten mercilessly. To disperse the crowd that gathered, the criminals even fired shots into the air. We need to determine whether these individuals had licenses to carry arms. Clearly, this was an attempt on Dr. Pedro Obaseki’s life,” he added.
He further stressed that Pedro’s rights to dignity and personal liberty were grossly violated, noting the public humiliation he suffered.
Reports say that youths suspected to be hired thugs attacked Don Pedro while he was playing football at Uwa Primary School field on Igbesamwan Street, Benin City, Edo State.
