Babajide Otitoju, Director of News at Television Continental (TVC), has warned that any state governor lacking the support of lawmakers risks a shortened tenure.
Otitoju made this observation on Sunday during an interview monitored by The Nation, while commenting on the ongoing political crisis in Rivers State, where members of the House of Assembly initiated impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngo.
He said, “The Rivers House of Assembly wants to impeach Fubara’s deputy even when they cannot clearly identify any misconduct. Many believe this is a political manoeuvre aimed at removing the governor and deputy, possibly to position the speaker as acting governor. The reality is that without legislative backing, a governor’s tenure could be in jeopardy. This was the case with Balarabe Musa in Kaduna State.”
The Rivers State crisis has generated widespread debate across political circles, with analysts describing the impeachment move as a reflection of deeper legislative-executive tensions in the state.
