Plateau Peace Icon, Imam Abubakar, Dies at 92

The revered Muslim cleric, Imam Abdullahi Abubakar, who won global admiration for protecting hundreds of Christians during the 2018 Plateau violence, has passed away at the age of 92.
Abubakar, the Chief Imam of Nghar village in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State, died on Thursday, leaving behind a legacy of courage, compassion and interfaith harmony.
The cleric came into national prominence on June 23, 2018, when armed attackers invaded several communities in Barkin Ladi, killing scores of residents. As panic spread, the imam opened the doors of his mosque and personal residence, sheltering at least 300 Christians who were fleeing for their lives. He firmly resisted pressure from the assailants to surrender those under his protection.
His extraordinary bravery attracted recognition within and outside Nigeria. The Federal Government honoured him with the title of Member of the Order of the Niger (MON), while former President Muhammadu Buhari publicly commended his heroism. In 2019, the United States Government presented him with the International Religious Freedom Award, citing his selfless commitment to the sanctity of human life.
Speaking in earlier interviews, Abubakar said his actions were guided by his faith and belief in the dignity of every human being, irrespective of religion or ethnicity.
Reacting to the news of his passing, Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang described the late imam as a beacon of peace and a symbol of unity in a region often scarred by communal strife.
In a condolence message issued by the state government, Mutfwang noted that Abubakar’s life demonstrated the power of love over hatred and forgiveness over vengeance. He said the deceased cleric helped to rebuild trust among divided communities and inspired a generation to embrace tolerance.
The governor added that the death of the nonagenarian has created a huge vacuum in Barkin Ladi and the entire state, urging residents to sustain the values of compassion and coexistence that he championed.
“On behalf of the government and people of Plateau State, we extend heartfelt condolences to his family and all who mourn him. May God grant them the strength to bear this irreplaceable loss,” the statement read.
Imam Abubakar is survived by children, grandchildren and a community that continues to celebrate his enduring legacy.
