Tinubu Hails Military Gains, Reaffirms Commitment to Security

President Bola Tinubu has expressed optimism that sustained military operations against terrorism and criminality are delivering tangible results across the country.
Speaking in Abuja on Tuesday at the 2026 Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day gala and award night, the President commended the armed forces and other security agencies for restoring peace to previously troubled communities.
Represented by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, Tinubu noted that areas once overwhelmed by fear now enjoy relative calm due to relentless operational pressure and improved coordination among security agencies.
He added that stronger collaboration with regional and international partners had further boosted public confidence and stabilised affected areas.
The President emphasised that the sacrifices of fallen and serving military personnel remain the bedrock of Nigeria’s unity, peace and democracy.
“Remembrance is a lasting national duty owed to those who laid down their lives in defence of the nation,” he said, stressing that honouring fallen heroes must go beyond ceremonial observances.
Tinubu also paid tribute to military families, appreciating spouses, children and relatives for their resilience and unwavering support to service personnel.
He announced two public engagement initiatives aimed at deepening citizens’ connection with the military. These include the ‘Thank-a-Soldier Electronic Wall,’ a digital platform for appreciation messages, and the ‘My Nigerian Hero Campaign,’ a year-long social media project designed to celebrate serving and retired officers.
Reiterating that security remains the top priority of his administration, the President pledged continuous investment in equipment, training and improved welfare for troops, while urging them to remain disciplined, united and loyal to the constitution.
Minister of Defence, Christopher Musa, in his remarks, described the courage and sacrifices of military personnel as central to Nigeria’s freedom and sovereignty. He said the awards presented at the event reflected stories of bravery and selfless service.
The ceremony featured honours for distinguished serving and retired officers, including Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu; former army chief, Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai; and ex-army spokesperson, Brig.-Gen. Sani Usman (rtd).
